JOB SUMMARY:
The Executive Director, Focused Innovation & Product Development, Post Acute, is responsible for providing business unit (BU) direction and guidance involving new product development opportunities that meet current and evolving customer requirements on a global or multinational basis. This includes: leading the design and development of new product initiatives, managing execution performance, and monitoring the ongoing competitiveness of existing products, which are specifically designed to provide a distinctive global competitive advantage to the BU and to HRC.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensuring the alignment between product development objectives of Post Acute and those vested in NPD-OPD
  • Directing the development and commercialization success of all new product development initiatives for the BU
  • Assessing and building BU product portfolio by improving quality, timing and synthesis of new products
  • Ensuring channel/business line new product development initiatives and opportunities are aligned, globally, with that of NPD in OPD; and, provide guidance to Post Acute leadership team on the viability of new products
  • Utilizing the PSRB system optimally to create globally responsive product development initiatives for the BU
  • Making scheduled and strategically relevant visits in the field, working with customers and sales representatives, and participating in customer meetings
  • Overseeing customer requirements definition, and functioning as the “voice of the customer” internally to the business
  • Obtaining the correct requirements from the customer and marketing and translating these into new product/platform specifications
  • Serving as project director – from beginning to end – providing project leadership on assigned BU projects to interim assigned project leaders/managers (who report directly to NPD)
  • Working & collaborating with NPD – OPD to ensure that new product development initiatives in the BU meet global economies of scale and scope, and meeting “global customer requirements and perspectives” guidance provided by the PSRB
  • Providing input into the project leaders’ / managers’ performance management – that are assigned on an interim, project basis, to their respective manager – for ongoing coaching, development, and performance management purposes
  • Identifying and pursuing new growth platforms for the BU positioned at the intersection of the BU’s actual or potential capabilities, unmet customer needs, and forces of change in the relevant market(s)
  • Describing the landscape of unmet customer requirements and analyzing where new offerings in the BU have worked, in order to subsequently develop successful new product innovations that can be strategically positioned in the BU’s evolving product portfolio
  • Other duties as may be assigned
  • Immerse in the end user environment to understand the product use scenarios and indentify unmet needs. Identify technology to meet customer unmet needs.
  • Responsible for product life cycle management; drive resolution to product field recalls or production holds.
  • Provide predictable project costs, schedule and product costs for NPD through duration of development.

    SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This role directly supervises 1 Director of Program Management and indirectly supervises those engineers / project leaders assigned to the BU’s projects.

  • Job Requirements and Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • In-depth understanding of the medical device industry required
  • Project development experience required, global new product development experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success managing multi-national, globally-distributed teams in execution of timely, cost effective new product development
  • Demonstrated customer focus, through recognition as “voice of the customer” within a company
  • Ability to adapt and respond to changing new product development challenges arising during the development cycle
  • Ability to effectively combine marketing and technical expertise to bring both customer requirements and technical insights to new development opportunities
  • Exceptional large project management skills
  • Exceptional problem solving and analysis skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional presentation skills

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • BS in technical discipline with 10+ years experience in product development, engineering, marketing, etc. MBA or graduate level technical education is strongly preferred.
